Novel PPAR receptor ligands

This research project deals with the design and synthesis of novel PPAR structures as single entities and/or as designed multiple ligands in order to study their potential for metabolic syndrome and neuroprotection.
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) belong to a family of nuclear receptors consisting of three isoforms involved in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. Therefore, there is a considerable interest in the search of new ligands as potential agents for treating disorders such as high levels of triglycerides, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. In addition, PPAR alpha and PPAR gamma activators induce preventive and acute neuroprotection through cerebral and vascular mechanisms.
