Once again the Instituto de Química Médica has participated in the 4º ESO+Empresa Programme. This is an initiative of the Comunidad de Madrid, whose main purpose is to introduce students into employment, offering work experiences in different companies and research centers, and facilitating the choice of their academic and professional future.
Eight students from different Secondary Schools have been welcomed at our Institute for 3 days (from 3rd to 5th April) and they have had the opportunity to visit our laboratories where researchers have shown them the opportunities directly related to Chemistry and also how to work in a Research Center.
Some of the proposed activities were:
- Synthesis of Aspirin
- Extraction of Caffeine from Coke
- Application of the Oxidation-Reduction Reactions (redox) for the preparation of a Breathalyzer
- Drawing molecules with ChemBioDraw Programme
- Fluorescence phenomena
- High Performance Liquid Chromatography method (HPLC-MS) to analise the purity of the synthesized Aspirin
Also, there were some conferences:
- What is Chemistry? What does a Chemist do?
- Drug discovery: a fascinating adventure
- Proteins
This is certainly a real opportunity for these students who, with great interest in the subject, voluntarily enroll in the programme intended to increase their knowledge and learn how we work. As students have pointed out, this work experience is going to help them choose their professional future, since they now have a broader view of what really makes a chemist in a research laboratory.
