From left to right and from top to bottom:
1. Test tube of one of the participants in the activity: «Extraction of DNA».
2. Application of the Oxidation-Reduction Reactions in order to make a Breathalyzer.
3. Application of the Oxidation-Reduction Reactions to observe colorimetric phenomena.
4. Fluorescence phenomena.

Once again the Centro de Química Orgánica “Lora-Tamayo” together with its Research Institutes: Instituto de Química Médica (IQM), Instituto de Química Orgánica General (IQOG), Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología de Polímeros (ICTP) and Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología de Alimentos y Nutrición (ICTAN), has organised the Open Days during the Science Week in Madrid 2016.

During three days (From 14th to 16th November) a large number of students as well as general public could enjoy a guided visit that takes about two hours. They were able to make a tour to the laboratories of the Center, in order to learn more about the work we develop in the different Research Institutes. Diverse experiments were made to show them the possibilities of Chemistry.

Some of the proposed activities during the Open Days in the Instituto de Química Médica were:

  • Application of the Oxidation-Reduction Reactions (redox) for the preparation of a Breathalyzer.
  • DNA Extraction.
  • Properties of Liquid Nitrogen and under UV light.
  • Fluorescence phenomena.
  • Preparation of the “Amalgam Coin” and the “Elephant Toothpaste Experiment”.
  • Application of the Oxidation-Reduction Reactions (redox) to observe colorimetric phenomena.
  • The principles of Chromatography.

¡Thanks a lot to all participants!
