Nicotinic receptor (α4β2 and α7)

Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are involved in a range of important processes related to cognitive functions, like the release of neurotransmitters and the mediation of post-synaptic excitatory responses. In addition, recent studies showed that the activation of nAChRs promoted the development of primary cerebellar neuroblasts, pointing out that nAChRs could be implicated in neurogenesis. This research line is based on the design and synthesis of new nicotinic agonists and their pharmacological study in neurogenesis and neurotransmission, together with the exploration of their therapeutic potential in different models of neurodegenerative diseases as AD and/or PD.
