Cannabinoids and PPAR ligands as regulators of neuroinflammation

This research project deals with the design and synthesis of novel PPAR and cannabinoid structures both as single entities and as designed multiple ligands in order to study their potential for neuroprotection.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) belong to a family of nuclear receptors consisting of three isoforms involved in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. In addition, PPAR alpha and PPAR gamma activators induce preventive and acute neuroprotection through cerebral and vascular mechanisms.

The neuroprotective effects of cannabinoids are well known and their potential are mainly based on the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties exerted by these compounds.
